This volume provides texts and translations of three classical plays with a general introduction and brief introductions to each play. Together with its companion volume, Three Biblical Plays (Lancaster: Lancaster University, 2006) it offers a sample of the extensive corpus of rhetoricians plays which dominated the literary culture of the Low Countries from c.1440-1625. The translations are a response to non-Dutch-speaking students and scholars of comparative drama and literary history who are aware of the unique wealth of plays of this period. We hope the volume may be of use to performers and researchers alike.

The Early European Drama Translation Series is sponsored by the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society (MRDS) to provide reliable, inexpensive translations of major European vernacular plays from the Middle Ages and Renaissance for use in a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. It is the intent of the series to internationalize the teaching and study of the early theater by supplying translations of important texts from many genres: mystery plays, saint plays, history plays, miracles, moralities, folk plays, carnival plays, processionals, and civic and ecclesiastical ceremonies of every kind.
