Le Bon Berger, one of the earliest “how-to” books in French, is a treatise full of practical information for the medieval shepherd. This critical edition of the Middle French text is accompanied by a facing-page English translation. Abundant notes discuss emendations and other textual matters, questions of usage and style, and difficulties of translation. A detailed index includes proper names found in both the text and the translation, as well as names of plants and diseases and certain other subjects discussed in the treatise.
