The greatest dramatist in the English language is also one of the greatest dramatists in the Spanish language. From the late 16th century onward Shakespeare’s plays were used by political foes of Spain in Colonial Latin America for provocative purposes. Whereas The Tempest is always considered Shakespeare’s standard “New World” reference, it was actually other plays, such as Coriolanus, A Winter’s Tale, and Cymbeline that have impacted Latin American and Caribbean theatre consciousness even more.
