The Melikian family, together with the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the Plotkin Museum of Jewish Culture, are presenting a unique display of Bibles from around the world, including India, Latin America, Sweden and Ethiopia. To celebrate that fact, twin symposia, (on October 17th and November 7th) will explore the journey of Spanish Jews and their Bibles after the 1492 expulsion, from the Mediterranean through colonial Mexico, Peru, and on to India’s Malabar coast; and shine a light on the complex system of Biblical interpretation and dialogue between Jewish and Christian scholars, including medieval Anglo-Saxon Church texts and Talmudic commentaries. Both symposia will provide exciting forums to share ideas, and see extraordinary examples of, the Book that continues to exercise a profound influence on humanity, whatever one’s religion.
