Public Programs

Distinguished Lectures in Medieval and Renaissance Studies

In the spring of 1999, ACMRS established its Distinguished Lecture Series in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Each semester, the Center brings an eminent scholar to ASU for a few days to present a free public lecture, followed by a complimentary reception. While at ASU, Distinguished Lecturers interact with upper-division and/or graduate classes and meet informally with students and faculty. Often, ACMRS is also able to arrange presentations at the University of Arizona in Tucson and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Public Lectures

In the spring of 2012, ACMRS established a new aspect of the center that will be entirely devoted to public programs. In this way, the center will serve as a bridge between the scholarly community and the public. These programs are intended to bring the information and research from our affiliates to the lovers of history in our local community.

Ad-Hoc Lectures

From time to time, ACMRS sponsors free public lectures by both visiting and local scholars. See a list of past lectures, and watch the calendar of events for upcoming talks.

Fall Symposium

ACMRS is dedicated to community outreach, the core of which is an annual fall symposium. These symposia explore topics of interest to the general public. In past years they have dealt with subjects such as Don Quixote, Robin Hood, Elizabeth I, J.R.R. Tolkien, love and sex in medieval and Renaissance Italy, Arthurian legends, Jews, Early Modern and Modern witch hunts, music and dance in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and death and dying in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Medieval Classroom

Step back in time to the Middle Ages and shoot a catapult, view the St. John's Bible, or learn calligraphy and how to make chain mail! Learn more about ACMRS school field trips, presentations and future plans for a Traveling Classroom.

Reading Groups

ACMRS hosts Latin and early vernacular language reading groups on the ASU Tempe campus every semester. These groups are free and open to the public. Click here to learn more about these groups and the times that they meet.
